I want to share with residents as early as possible a huge programme of works that has been scheduled for Chipping Hill Bridge in Witham.
As many people pointed out following the recent Jubilee event, the pedestrian bridge has a tendency to wobble from side to side and there are also critical works required to the adjacent brick road bridge, as well as the side railings, following traffic incidents over the years.
As a result, the two bridges and the small section of road in Chipping Hill/Powers Hall End will be shut from 𝟏𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 – 𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫. To be clear, this means this river crossing will be impassable and a diversion will be in place to manage the dispersed traffic through the town centre.
I realise that this closure is a significant period of time and I did at first think this timeframe was a mistake or just a cautious placeholder. However, querying this with Essex Highways they have confirmed to me that it is correct and the scale of work required to keep both of these bridges in working order.
It is also worth highlighting that plans for maintenance work to the bridge have been a long time in the making with planning permission required and a sourcing of like-for-like materials considering the age and heritage value of the brick bridge.
There will be more information out in the coming weeks on the road closure and what mitigation measures will be put in place. However, if residents have any concerns or questions about this they can contact me or my Essex County Council colleague for Witham Southern, Cllr Derrick Louis.
